About Dr. Steve Balt

Thoughtful, individualized psychiatric care grounded in clinical expertise and genuine human connection.

DR. STEVE BALT, MD

A Thoughtful Approach to Psychiatry

I am a board-certified psychiatrist dedicated to providing individualized, patient-centered care. My work is grounded in careful listening, clinical expertise, and a deep respect for each person’s unique experiences.

I believe that effective psychiatric care begins with understanding—not just symptoms, but the broader context of a person’s life. Whether you are navigating anxiety, depression, or other challenges, my goal is to help you gain clarity, stability, and a greater sense of well-being.

Treatment may include psychotherapy, medication management, or a combination of both, depending on your individual needs.

I am a graduate of Stanford University, Weill Medical College of Cornell University, and Rockefeller University, where I developed a strong foundation in both the scientific and human dimensions of mental health.

I completed my residency training in adult psychiatry at Stanford Hospital and UCLA-Kern Medical Center, gaining experience across a wide range of psychiatric conditions and treatment approaches.

My work integrates multiple evidence-based approaches, including:

  • Psychopharmacology
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Public mental health

I also have a particular interest in addiction psychiatry, including opioid dependence (Suboxone treatment) and process addictions such as eating disorders.

I have worked in a variety of clinical settings, including:

  • Medical Director and therapist in a residential addiction treatment program in Marin County
  • Psychiatrist at the Schuman-Liles Clinic in Oakland, California
  • Psychiatrist at North Bay Psychiatric Associates in San Rafael, California

My experience also includes:

  • Working with DBT Associates of the Peninsula as a therapist and DBT skills trainer
  • Research at the Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Medical Center focused on improving opioid prescribing practices
  • Research at California Pacific Medical Center studying the antidepressant effects of ketamine

I have taught and presented at several institutions, including:

  • Stanford University
  • Stanford Medical School
  • UCLA
  • Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

I have also presented at professional conferences, including the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Annual Meeting and advanced psychopharmacology workshops.
